Long eyelashes are normal to Shih Tzus but not all of them have these. It’s not something that you should be worried about because let’s admit it, it adds a ‘wow factor’ to the Shih Tzu breed’s expressive dark eyes. However, if their eyelashes are already causing them any form of discomfort, they can be trimmed during grooming.

Long eyelashes are one of the most common features of the Shih Tzu breed. Since they are originally meant to be dogs for the Chinese royalties, dog breeds that produce litters with elegant features were bred to produce the now called ‘Shih Tzu’ breed. The long Shih Tzu eyelashes are from the genetic structure of one of their ancestors which is the Lhasa Apso.

There are times that the eyelashes might need to be trimmed as the lower lashes can curl up to the eyes Ling Ling Shih Tzu Eyelashesitself. If you want your Shih Tzu’s eyelashes to be trimmed, make sure that it is done by a professional groomer to avoid any injury. It won’t cause your Shih Tzu any harm if you trim their eyelashes as long as they are not cut back too far or removed completely. You also need to make sure that the hair around their eyes and face are trimmed.

Shih Tzus are very prone to various eye infections and so in addition to trimming their eyelashes, make sure that you clean the area around their eyes at least once a week. To do this, make your Shih Tzu sit down and place one of your hands on top of their head. After which, gently clean the fur around each of their eyes with cotton balls. Do this with a solution of one part hydrogen peroxide and 10 parts clean water.


Since most Shih Tzus have long eyelashes, it’s one of our responsibility as owners to take care of it so it doesn’t affect our Shih Tzu’s health negatively. Make it a point to take them to the groomer and have their lashes trimmed accordingly. Also, take some time a week to clean the area around their lashes so no goop will form on it.
